The Indigenous People's Survival Handbook

| I have met too many youth and middle-aged people stuck in a sort of cultural limbo. They are unable to move forward into the promise of a Westernized future and they cannot return to their traditional ways of the past, fearing condemnation from the missionary vision of the world. To their new frame of reference, the past is going backwards into an embarrassing primitive condition. Though there exists no spot for them in this "new Christian future" either. They find themselves lost, confused, and struggling to put meaning back into their lives. They often subject themselves to the mind numbing effects of alcohol and drugs and the health deflating effects of junk foods that are pervasive in some traditional communities. Currently, there are never-before-seen adverse health and emotional problems plaguing the remote peoples of the world. I have listened to the cries of the grandmothers. They see what is happening to their youth and are helpless to prevent it. They have asked me to help get the word out to support the coming generations to understand the impact the west is having on their diet and mind. This handbook will serve as a self-help guide for indigenous people find footing where there is little support. It will identify problems of diet, alcohol, and other western influences that erode a person's sense of self and position in the natural world. For instance, many indigenous people are unaware of the terrible effects junk food has on their health and cannot readily identify their root of their despair. The handbook is for those who find themselves suffering between two worlds. It will reflect the voices of concern from the elders and I will seek their council while writing it. It will be self-published by desktop, translated and distributed by the Sol Project. |
